Press the parry button just before an enemy attack connects to deflect it. Parrying costs a little stamina and deals big damage to the attacker’s posture, opening a finisher. Not every attack can be parried — glowing or heavily telegraphed attacks must be dodged or blocked. Practice on corrupted soldiers first, then move to Eternal Guard who love delayed and fake-out timings.

You drop unspent Catalysts where you die and respawn at the last lantern checkpoint you lit. Return to your death spot to recover the pool before dying again — die twice in a row and the earlier drop is lost forever. Death also feeds your corrupting power, so each failure gives you another small source of growth. Always bank Catalysts at an upgrade point before pushing into a new area.

Transmutations are supernatural abilities fuelled by the plague’s corrupting power. You unlock them through story milestones and upgrade points, then equip a small set alongside your cutlass and flintlock. They include offensive bursts of flame, mobility tools for parkour traversal, and utility powers that change how you explore. Transmutations share a resource meter, so choose loadouts that fit the fight.

Catalysts are the upgrade currency of Valor Mortis. Spend them at upgrade points to raise health, stamina and supernatural power, and to buy new transmutations. You carry a pool of unspent Catalysts that drops where you die, so recovery trips are a core loop of the game. Prioritise stamina early — the parry economy depends on it — and health when you start learning harder bosses.

Valor Mortis is a soulslike, so expect a serious challenge, but the parry system gives skilled players a strong safety valve. Most early enemies are parryable and predictable, letting you learn the rhythm before the Eternal Guard arrive. Death is forgiving: you keep your upgrades and can always recover dropped Catalysts. If you struggle, tank builds with extra health and block efficiency make boss learning much easier.

Community reports put a full playthrough with exploration at around 25 hours, with completionists adding several more hours for secrets, lore scrolls and the optional bosses. The Metroidvania map and missable side quests reward thorough exploration. New Game Plus and multiple endings add replay value after the credits.

Valor Mortis launched on October 13, 2026 for PC (Steam), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it is included in Xbox Game Pass from day one. A Deluxe Edition Upgrade DLC is available at launch. Reviews across platforms are Very Positive on Steam, with strong Metacritic scores on PC and PS5.
